By concentrating on quality songs and arrangements, and searching to enhance the authentic Reggae format at every turn, Humal products have proven the exception to this trend - a development now underlined by many releases. A permanent attraction on the Reggae charts for the last 10 years, Humal productions are defined by old-school musical values, even as they point the way forwards. This skillful, progressive use of tradition, together with good management and promotion - have made their Birmingham HQ a haven for so many established and up and coming Reggae legends from Jamainca and the UK, as demonstrated on the label's unmissable collections.
A triumph of faith, commitment, determination and hard work, Humal's story begins with Ransford (AKA) The Great African, who is originally from Sierra Leone. After encouragement from stars such as Ken Parker, Jackie Mitto, Justin Hinds and Alexander O'neil he began building a studio. This project has subsequently developed beyond all recognition and arguably is the best reggae sound in Britain.
The name Humal itself was inspired by his grandmother (Humu Jalloh). A tribute to a great "African Woman". Humal has otherwise come to mean excellence in reggae circles - a reputation that's grown at such pace, its no wonder that Humal's already ranked alongside such great contemporary Jamaican labels as Xterminator, Penthouse and Channel One Studios.
Galvanised by the reaction afforded to Skibu in 2000, the label has released materials by a succession of top artists, including Jamaican stars such as Admiral Tibet, Jimmy Riley, Luciano, Freddie McGregor, Frankie Paul, Macka B, Junior Kelly, Queen Omega and Justin Hinds.
A label for all seasons, Humal represents the past, present and future sounds of reggae music. The common denominator, as stated earlier, is quality of arrangements, production and lyrics - elements held dear by all genuine music lovers and that will not only ensure Humal's position at the forefront of British reggae, but also continue to win it friends throughout the world. |
